  • TCP Port Scanner in Bash – good coders code, great reuse – I just had this quick idea to write a tcp port scanner in bash. Bash supports the special /dev/tcp/host/port file that you can read/write. Writing to this special file makes bash open a tcp connection to host:port. If writing to the port succeeds, the port is open, else the port is closed.

  • Five Tips for a Better sendmail Configuration – O’Reilly Media – Unix vendors bundle sendmail with the operating system and ship it out preconfigured. It is very easy to install the OS and use the sendmail configuration delivered with the system. Don't be fooled by this apparent simplicity. In the long run, it is better to take charge of your fate. Creating a custom sendmail configuration using current software and features selected for your environment will give you better performance, reliability, security, and maintainability. Here are some tips to get you started on building a better sendmail configuration.

  • mylvmbackup – mylvmbackup is a tool for quickly creating backups of a MySQL server's data files. To perform a backup, mylvmbackup obtains a read lock on all tables and flushes all server caches to disk, creates a snapshot of the volume containing the MySQL data directory, and unlocks the tables again. The snapshot process takes only a small amount of time. When it is done, the server can continue normal operations, while the actual file backup proceeds.

  • Tightening Default AIX Sendmail – disciplinux – I started looking at the default AIX configuration of sendmail for the SMTP Open Relay issues. Previously I had sent a configuration change to
allow only specific relay-domains. However, it appears that the default sendmail configuration sets "PROMISCUOUS_RELAY" which overrides the
    RELAY-DOMAINS directive.
  • Configure sendmail to start logging Subject in maillog | www.linux4beginners.info – In this article we will learn how to configure sendmail so that you can log "Subject" in /var/log/maillog as by default sendmail does not log Subject to maillog file.

This is really interesting. Business people many times are interested in getting mail log files analyzed. To analyse mail logs they need various field to appera in mail logs. e.g. "From", "To", "Subject" etc from the sent email. By default sendmail logs From and To fields but it does not log Subject field. In this article you will learn how to enable sendmail to log "Subject".

  • NetHogs: What program is using that bandwidth? – NetHogs is a small 'net top' tool. Instead of breaking the traffic down per protocol or per subnet, like most tools do, it groups bandwidth by process. NetHogs does not rely on a special kernel module to be loaded. If there's suddenly a lot of network traffic, you can fire up NetHogs and immediately see which PID is causing this. This makes it easy to indentify programs that have gone wild and are suddenly taking up your bandwidth.

  • LiveUSB image with OpenBSD – carry your OS on a memory stick – It is trivial to a create a bootable USB stick with OpenBSD. I wanted to create one and realized that this will be of general use for anyone who likes a UNIX USB memory stick that they can carry with them on a keychain.

If you wish to have LiveCD/LiveDVD instead, please refer to our other LiveCD-OpenBSD project on sourceforge!

This USB image shall not touch your hard disk in any way. All the operations are done in the USB stick and main memory. Nothing will be written to your MBR or boot loaders!

  • http://www.wormnet.nl/cprules – CPRules.html contains the description of the main program, how to create the html output from the Check Point files and how to influence the output.

The program uses two supporting libraries and one supporting program. The first is specifically developed for this program to read and manipulate the Check Point databases in memory, called CheckPoint.pm. I hope to use this library for other projects involving Check Point FW-1 databases …

The other library, Template.pm, is used for creating the html pages from a template, giving more freedom in designing the web pages. The author of this module is Sam Tregar ([email protected]).

The supporting program CPUsers.pl is to convert the exported userfiles to a CheckPoint database format to be used by CPRules. CPUsers.html describes how it works.

    1. An empty 250g Illy Espresso ground coffee can

    2. A Type N bulkhead socket and a Type N plug

    3. A piece of WiFi antenna extension cable with a reverse SMA connector on the end.

    4. A short piece of coat hanger for the active element of the antenna

strong, two-factor authentication with mobile phones

Using static passwords for authentication, as it is commonly done, has quite a few security drawbacks: passwords can be guessed, forgotten, written down and stolen, eavesdropped or deliberately being told to other people.
A better, more secure way of authentication is the so called "two-factor" or "strong authentication" based on one time passwords. Instead of authenticating with a simple password, each user carries a device ("token") to generate passwords that are valid only one time.

  • Open Monitoring Distribution – Wiki – OMD – Welcome to OMD – the Open Monitoring Distribution. OMD implements a completely new concept of how to install, maintain and update a monitoring system built on Nagios.

OMD avoids the tedious work of manually compiling and integrating Nagios addons while at the same time avoiding the problems of pre-packaged installations coming with your Linux distribution, which are most times outdated and provide no regular updates.

OMD bundles Nagios together with many important addons and can easily be installed on every major Linux distribution. We provide prebuilt packages for all enterprise Linux distributions and also for some other, such as Ubuntu 11.04.

  • Linux Malware Detect | R-fx Networks – Linux Malware Detect (LMD) is a malware scanner for Linux released under the GNU GPLv2 license, that is designed around the threats faced in shared hosted environments. It uses threat data from network edge intrusion detection systems to extract malware that is actively being used in attacks and generates signatures for detection. In addition, threat data is also derived from user submissions with the LMD checkout feature and from malware community resources. The signatures that LMD uses are MD5 file hashes and HEX pattern matches, they are also easily exported to any number of detection tools such as ClamAV.
