  • Hive – Hadoop Wiki – Hive is a data warehouse infrastructure built on top of Hadoop.   • Tuning the AIX file caches – Wikistix – By default, AIX is tuned for a mixed workload, and will grow its VMM file cache up to 80% of physical RAM. While this may be great for an NFS server, SMTP relay or web server, it is very poor for running any application which does its own cache management. This includes most databases (Oracle, DB2, Sybase, PostgreSQL, MySQL using InnoDB tables, TSM) and some other software (eg. the Squid web cache).

    Common symptoms include high paging (high pgspin and pgspout in topas), high system CPU time, the lrud kernel thread using CPU, slow overall system throughput, slow backups and slow process startup.

    For most database systems, the ideal solution is to use raw logical volumes. If this is not acceptable, then direct I/O and concurrent I/O should be used. If for some reason this is not possible, then the last solution is to tune the AIX file caches to be less aggressive

  • DIY ~20U server rack – So, this is something mike has been looking to make for the past few days, ever since he got his new computer case for his awesome new computer. He originally wanted to buy a server rack, so he can mount his case in it, and mount the NAS he has with it, but those cost lots of lots of money. So, our solution, after thinking up at night, was to make one ourselves. I suggested iron gas piping, and mike suggested angle iron. Mike won because in the end, it would be easier to build with angle iron.

It is able to forge or decode packets of a wide number of protocols, send them on the wire, capture them, match requests and replies, and much more. It can easily handle most classical tasks like scanning, tracerouting, probing, unit tests, attacks or network discovery (it can replace hping, 85% of nmap, arpspoof, arp-sk, arping, tcpdump, tethereal, p0f, etc.).
