  • Understanding the Zend Framework, Part 1: The basics – Summary:  It has been four years since this series was first published, and since then, the Zend Framework has grown up to become one of the most popular PHP frameworks. Technical alliances with companies such as Abobe, Microsoft, and IBM, have strengthened the support and stability of the framework, which is now used by startups and Fortune 500 companies around the world. This article gives you a high-level view of the Zend Framework, explaining its general concepts and preparing you for the rest of this "Understanding the Zend Framework" series, which goes into the details by chronicling the creation of a new online RSS/Atom feed reader. You won't do much coding here, but for the rest of the series, you should be familiar with PHP.

  • How to: Ubuntu PHP Remove Suhosin – […] One of my projects for the "holidays" is moving one of my servers from Gentoo to Ubuntu. During planning for this, I noticed that the Ubuntu version of PHP5 includes Suhosin. That's a problem.<br />
    The problem with Suhosin is that it's designed to stop sloppy applications from doing bad things. I'm sure it does a reasonable job of that, but in the process it can interfere with good applications (see examples for Joomla). Since I'm in the business of writing good applications, Suhosin is a bad idea. Worse yet, it can provide a false sense of security, since it can't deal with anything except typical PHP errors. As far as I'm concerned, this class of "security blanket" provides false comfort and is no replacement for auditing and testing.<br />

  • FYI :: Operating Systems Release History :: Software Development … – Last updated: June 21, 2005<br />
    <br />
    The release history (below) includes the published dates (E&OE) when the vendor will withdraw product availability and support for various released versions of their respective operating systems. Knowing these dates in advance helps customers (e.g., system administrators) to plan and make informed IT decisions (such as operating system upgrades, software and hardware purchases, etc.).<br />
    <br />
    Similarly, application developers can respond proactively through adaptive maintenace, or at least be aware of (and thus, anticipate) inquiries about migration (e.g., environment differences), compatibility (e.g., APIs), and porting (e.g., 32-bit to 64-bit).<br />
    <br />
    Disclaimer: Please check with the vendor's web site for updates and program details (e.g., support options, service level, geographical differences, etc.).<br />
