  • Resolve Hardware Status Alert SEL_FULLNESS | Brian Ragazzi – […] I noticed an alert on two UCS B250M2 hosts in the vSphere Client. The alert Name was “Status of other host hardware objects”. This isn’t helpful. To get more information, you have to navigate to the Hardware Status tab of the host properties. Here I saw more information about the alert. It’s cryptically named “System Board 0 SEL_FULLNESS”. […]
  • Network Stack: Cisco ASA Packet Capture – […] The ASA platform has fantastic built-in packet capture capabilities which can come in very handy for troubleshooting issues. I will be demonstrating some of the capabilities using an ASA 5505 running version 9.0(1).Performing a packet capture is done using the capture command from privileged exec mode. […][ Fantastic… I won’t say that ]

  • Multistage environments with Ansible – Ross Tuck – Ansible has excellent documentation but one thing I was confused about was the best way to store the configuration for multistage projects: say, different passwords for dev, staging, production. This isn’t really covered in the ansible-examples repo because it’s specific to your project and while the documentation has recommendations, it doesn’t spell it out completely (which I need since I’m an idiot).

  • Redhat I/O Scheduler Configuration in a Virtual Machine. – FATMIN – […] However, because of the fact that ESX is its own built in elevator, the Linux kernel's elevator is not needed, and in fact can hurt disk performance. So its best to disable the elevator inside your linux VMs […] Da controllare comunque dovrebbe andare anche su altre distro
  • RDP with NLA from Linux – Is there a way to connect to a Windows 2008 Remote Desktop Services with NLA from Linux?   Yes! FreeRDP is a fork of Rdesktop. Rdesktop seems to have stopped developement, so a fork is very welcome. NLA is still not in the main release, but it isn't hard to check out a copy from GIT and compile the latest source yourself.

  • Howto: Change the IP address of a Dell 4/P DRAC from the command line without rebooting the server – Normally you configure a Dell Remote Access Card (DRAC) when a server is initially commissioned. Once the card is set, administrators rarely if ever need to modify the settings. If you do need to change the settings, the server needs to be restarted so the DRAC BIOS can be modified, which obviously results in system downtime and requires a physical presence at the server console.
  • bash ini parser | /var/log/ajdiaz – In some situations i like to use INI files as configuration files, as python do. But bash do not provide a parser for these files, obviously you can use a awk code or a couple of sed calls, but if you are bash-priest and do not want to use nothing more, then you can try the following obscure code:
  • Jugg Monkey: VMWare HA Agent had an error – I recently had a problem with one hoste in a 3 node VMWare ESX 3. 5 cluster. For some reason, the HA Agent would not start after I applied outstanding software updates. I kept receiving "VMWare HA Agent had an error" in the alerts after the host came online. I had recently needed to change the IP address of the VMWare 3.5 ESX host, so I figured that was the root cause.

For those of you who are not familiar with RVC, it is console UI for vCenter Server and ESX(i) host and it provides a way to interact with your vSphere infrastructure like the vSphere Client but using a console shell. RVC can be installed on a Windows, Linux or Mac OSX system and it's built on RbVmomi which is an open source Ruby library/bindings to the vSphere API.

  • Creating a low cost, high performance ESX cluster | SPK and Associates – As Senior Systems Integrator for SPK and Associates, a California based IT services company specializing in infrastructure management services, I recently completed an interesting project.  The goal was to create an ESX cluster for a small engineering group (about 40 users).  The cluster would be used for a wide variety of applications — software repositories, QA testing of linux appliances, databases, and potentially others as well.  Other than a gigabit network switch and some PDUs, there was no existing infrastructure in place that I could leverage.<br />
    <br />
    For under $18k in hardware, and $7k in VMWare licensing, we were able to build a 2-node VCenter cluster with full HA support.  I expect this to be able to handle upwards of 60 virtual machines, based on typical usage.
